Why did you decide to get rid of the entire cast? It just seemed like the logical thing to do. The show is about kids aged 16 to 18 and the time they spend at college. It was kind of natural that we were going to change the cast round every two years, because it's those two years that we really focus on.
We didn't really want to do a show where they all go off to university. The show's very much about teenage life and not university life. Did the cast always know they had a limited lifespan? We told them as soon as we'd really decided, because we didn't know that we were going to get a second series or how certain things were going to go down. We told them around about when series two was commissioned.
They were sad, but you know, it's all very exciting for them because they get to go off and do different stuff.
They're all getting exciting new parts. There have been rumours that the new series will focus on Effy and her gang, and the final scene of this series would seem to support that. Is it true? I don't want to say she'll be the focus or the main character, because we don't really do that, but she'll definitely be in series three and will be heavily featured, yes.
Effy has an obvious link with Tony, so does that mean the current cast could make guest appearances? These young guys want to move on and do different stuff and I'm not sure they'll want to be tied down to Skins.
Also we're about telling stories about the individual characters. Just thinking about it, I don't know how much it would bring to these [new] characters to have Anwar or Cassie just suddenly turn up. I just can't quite see what the benefit of that would be, other than for them to say 'hi'.
We haven't ruled it out but I think it's unlikely. How's production on the new series coming along? But if we are then we'll have to begin filming in 13 weeks from now, so we've already started working on it. But it's in New York where she finally let her guard down, and learned to accept the realness of reality, no matter how hard it was.
In Season One, it was never really clear if Tony actually liked Michelle or if she was just easy to wrap around his finger. But after finding out that his best friend and girlfriend got together, all became clear for Tony, and it was downright heartbreaking to watch. The look of relief on her face as she realises that JJ has made a friend was priceless. Chris started off the series as comic relief, but quickly revealed himself to be so much more complex. The love he expressed to Jal was heart-warming, and brought some much needed happy-tears to Skins.
Jal was always one of the strongest characters on Skins who had to make some incredibly tough choices, including her decision to terminate her pregnancy. Remembering Chris and his life motto while deciding what to do with the baby just made his death all too real again. To end Season One with a montage like this was so powerful. It not only gave us a chance to reflect on everything that had just happened like Tony being HIT by a fucking bus , but set a darker tone for future seasons.

Skins was the first to attempt to accurately portray the lives of British teenagers, and tackle the harder issues they deal with while maintaining a whip-smart sense of humour.
Most of the time characters were likeable and semi-believable. The episode begins with Chris recovering at home after suffering with a subarachnoid haemorrhage, the same thing that killed his brother. Every second of his death was shown on screen: Chris sweats, then shakes, then blood pours from his nose and mouth. But it was real, and arguably on the O. Goofy, sweet Chris Miles was a beloved character, and despite there only being one episode for that generation of cast after his death, the decision to kill him off was a bold one.
Bryan Elsley, the co-creator of Skins and, along with Jamie Brittain, was one half of the team who wrote the episode, describes that decision for Dazed. So I guess we just went ahead and were a bit surprised to discover that people actually had an opinion about it.
