However, bearing in mind our guideline of matching the image resolution and the native resolution, it could be a slight advantage to send a p image if you had a p or p screen. However, the results of this can vary between models of television, and could also depend on the quality of the image coming from the source device — so the best idea may be to test both.
If you switch the output of your source between p and p, you may notice a difference in picture quality on your p TV — or you may not! With p you have the choice of a lower resolution image worse with progressive scan better — and with i you have a higher resolution image better with interlaced scan worse.
The one you choose may just come down to testing it on your equipment and seeing if you can see a difference. As already mentioned, as a starting point I would try matching the image and native resolution. The best results may well come down to the quality of the equipment you are using, and how well the images are scaled and de-interlaced.

While p is definitely your best bet in terms of highest resolution, don't think that i is just as ideal because the number's the same. Choosing a progressive resolution like p will look a lot nicer. In p one could see the pinstripes in Bill's tie because "video noise" was generated by them. In i, however, the tie and its fine pinstripe pattern was as crisp and clear and sharp as can be, no "video noise" whatsoever!
So the difference between p and i is significant, with i much more clear on fine details onscreen. Just wanted to say here that the line that the industry uses: "it is practically impossible for an average customer to tell the difference between the picture quality of p and i" is just simply hype. It should be revised to "it is substantially cheaper to deliver content in p over wires or satellite channels" The difference is stunning, actually.
